I need to remove the pulley from my alternator and replace it with a different pulley. Is the nut holding the pulley on a right or left handed nut? Before I start tightening what I should be loosening. Also, what is the "trick" to getting this nut off without spinning the pulley/fan assembly? A buddy told me to stick a bolt down into the alternator to stop the pulley/fan from spinning. Before I break something.....help.
Thank you,

Mike an impact wrench works well. If you don't have one you will have to go to plan B. If you look in the end of the shaft you will see it has 6 sides for an allen wrench to fit in it. Hold the shaft with an allen wrench and and use a box end wrench to loosen the nut. If you stick anything in the alternator at any location you will risk breaking it.
I'll bet some Ford guy told you to do that http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Welcome to Team Chevelle I see this is your first post.

The thread should be right hand. (for the trivia buff: Corvair alternators used left hand thread)

Thank you guys, I got the job done. I am however mildly retarded, I never even paid attention to the allen head on the shaft that the pulley goes on.

Mike we all suffer from a little retardation just being involved in this hobby. What other group do you know of that would spend 30k on a car that was mass produced and only costs $2800 when new. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Glad you got it fixed.
