View Full Version : Nit-picky HEI wiring questions

Have read much on this conversion (points to HEI)both on TC site and from other sources, but need a bit more help. The car is a 69 Malibu. I know I should connect the "BAT" terminal on the new HEI coil to the bulkhead connector or possibly to the ign. fuse on the fuse block. I haven't found an exact description of the wire colors on my bulkhead, even in the shop manual, so not sure what wire is what there.

On what I am calling the bulkhead connector (mounted on firewall, pass. side, next to vacuum canister and distributor), there are two connector terminals. One terminal receives a single dark red wire. The other terminal receives a connector with 3 wires: 1. one orange, larger gauge than others with in-line fuse, 2. one is purple, and 3. one is blue. From what I can piece together to this point, the large orange wire with fuse is the ignition circuit and that's what I would tie into the BAT wire from the new HEI coil. Is this right? If so, connect to which side of the fuse? Is it better to run a wire to the fuse block itself, and if so, to which side of that fuse? If you read all this, I owe you big time, many thanks.

The wires you are describing are for the starter and heater circuit. Purple to the starter, blue to the heater blower motor. You need to run a separate 12ga wire from the BAT terminal on the HEI to the IGN post on the fuse panel under the dash. If you want to use a blank spot on the bulkhead connector under the master cylinder you can, but most just 'feed' the wire through in an inconspicuious spot.

Believe this is the right one to add in for the HEI to the fuseblock. Easier than adding to the existing harness asDave pointed out. Having difficulty making out the connector in the picture.

Just another option, you can add a wire to the bulkhead/engine harness.
This (http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/bin/imageserver.x/00000000/azss/69hei.JPG) is a pic of a 69 engine harness bulk head connector. The arrow is pointing to the coil wire. This one has both the resistor wire and an HEI wire, heavy red. It’s a repro harness.

Your resistor wire can be removed from the bulk head. The wire, the black sealing junk and the male connector can be released and will come out of the connector, then install a #10 wire with the HEI connector on one end and the male bulkhead wire terminal on the other end.

Note: Be sure to reseal after installing new wire.
