I am in the process of restifying my '69 Chevelle Front Wiring Harness and replacing all of the Alternator wiring from the bulkhead connector forward. I have the vinyl non-adhesive tape and the proper connectors, but my question is.....what is the OEM sealant that they put in and around the bulkhead connector where the wires poke through? Is it just black silicone? What works best and keeps moisture out?

I am sure that the stuff is not silicone, as I recently pulled apart one of these on a donor car. I believe that it is what is called "skinning grease" which dries where it is exposed to air and stays mushy where it is not. This keeps out the water without gluing the parts together. However, I cannot give you any advice on where to get some of it. Maybe calling some grease distributor (yellow pages) and getting some info from them would work.
