It could be a bad turn signal switch. I would look at a wire diagram and see what color wire is for the passenger side and test it where it comes out of the column. If it works there, then you may have a damage wire going back to the light.

Your reply said bad TURN signal switch? did you mean brake lite switch? My turn indicators work-its the cable(wire cable for tilt wheel) that is broken. any one know what years used the tilt cable colume, besides the 1966 chevelleand GM a-bodies? BOB your idea of testing wire as it comes out of colume won't help on a Brake light problem. but thanks-mark

Mark. I have never payed any special attention to a Canadian Chevelle wiring circuit, but my guess is the brake lights work exactly the same as with the American ones.
If that is the case the 12 V from the brake light switch is fed to the directional switch, because the rear brake lights are interrupted by the directional switch to make them flash.
In picture http://www.si.hhs.nl/~rob/images/other/column.jpg you can see how this works internally (lower left drawing). In the upper left drawing you can see the wiring on the connector.
Hope this helps.

As has been mentioned, step on the brake and see if there is power on the wires coming out of the turn signal switch. Yellow is left, green is right. No power coming out of the green, there is a problem in the turn signal switch. These are a pain to find for a tilt column. Check this thread. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum22/HTML/001881.html
If you just need a cable, I believe Dick sells them, but he has no switches that I know of. www.true-connections.com (http://www.true-connections.com)
