I have a '69 chevelle 396 with a t350
transmission. the problem is, that when i come to a complete stop(say a red light)
the trans will slip out of drive. I then try
to put it in neutral and then drive' but it
doesn't ingauge. it seem to ingauge if i put it in park; then down to drive. This doesn't happen all the time. But when it does it really sucks. Any feed back is appiciated.

Have you tried adjusting the linkage. Incorrectly adjusted linkage can damage a tran, requiring a rebuild. It sounds like drive may not be fully engaged. If an adjustment doesn't fix it then you may need internal work. I'm guessing the fluid level is correct. Also, make sure the exhaust pipe isn't hitting the linkage (column shifter). I had that happen but in my case the trans would jump to neutral under acceleration.

Do you have a floor shifter or column?

Does it go back into drive when you rev it up? If so, then you need some new seals in your transmission. This may be a sign thqt the seals are leaking a bit and when you bring up the revs, the pump volume output is enough to overcome the leakage.
