As little as I know about what a ballast resistor does,I think it has something to do with protecting the stock points in the distribiter?. If I change to electronic ignition do I need to worry about the ballast resisitor any more? Also I hear about one wire alternators,is this the way to go, since I need to upgrade soon. Thanks Timber. 67'Elke 396 manual trans.

The ballast resistor isn't necessary for electronic ignitions. They like full system voltage. The resistor reduces voltage to around 9 volts.

Go with a 3-wire setup, you'll be glad you did. You can buy a late model GM alternator, with plenty of current capacity, for a decent price.

There's an article that explains the upgrade in Team Chevelle's Tech Reference section. http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ There's also one about the ignition upgrade.
