My husband and I have the ac/heater control unit out of our 68 mailbu and he wants to clean under the faceplate. We can't seem to get the knobs to come off so we can pull the faceplate off. They don't just pull off (have not resorted to brute force yet) and we don't see any clips holding them on. What are we doing wrong?

I beleive they do pull off but not easily, at least for 70 they do. Put a rag over the knob and pull it off with pliers.

not exactly sure about a 68, but had the same problem on my 66. I opted to take the levers apart on the back side, then pull the whole lever out with knob still attached from front. worked out well. just a suggestion.

Generally had to break the old ones off by crushing them with pliers and installing new ones.

Unless time has made them loose it take a pair of pliers and a new set of knobs. They are not expensive unless you have one of those years and modles with no after market. If you have a pair of ceramic tile nippers you can pull them off with out damage I did on my mine to do the same thing you are doing. Then you just glue them back on. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

A "LITTLE HEAT" on the control arm helps a bunch!
