It would be too easy to draw it and I CAN'T WITH THIS!@

Can't do the drawing but on an HEI, draw an imaginary line from the center of the distributor to the #1 cylinder. the #1 terminal is on the line.

Alternativly, If the distributor is installed correctly, there should be 2 terminals "straight across" at the front of the dist. The wire terminal box where the TACH and BATT wires plug in should stick out straight towards the drivers side. The #1 terminal is the one on the drivers side (of the pair that are straight across on the front).

Another way to visualize it is to think of looking straight down at the HEI. As a clock face, noon would be straight back towards the trunk. The TACH and BATT terminal box would be at 3 o'clock and #1 would be at about 5:00 o'clock. #8 will be at about 7:00 o'clock.

I like Tom's description, but I'd revise it to sey that #1 would be found at 4:00, #8 at about 5:30, and #4 at about 6:30. just a thought... Bryan

Looks right to me..., but advanced to it's normal position in relation to the engine I'd still say that mid-way between 4 & 8 would point towards the front.Wright?

Nah!

1 and 8 are straight across on the front, 2 is just in front of the Tach-Batt box. Take my word for it , trust me, all that!

I can drop the dist and walk it around to line up the oil pump drive blindfolded.

If you have an aftermarket cam, the rotation of the dist can come out off a little, even if it's wired right.

How did that guy make that nice drawing, anyway? Is that what UBB code does?
