: TBI Fuel Injection Swap
Mike H Dec 8th, 99, 5:53 PM I have the opportunity to pick up a new TBI unit from a 94-96 4.3 ltr V8 (code W). I was told that I could swap this into my 70 El Camino with a 350 sbc.
Unit has everything but the ECM. Does the ECM control everthing, or is there some other controller? Will this work on a 350?
What electrical problems will I run into?
If anyone has done a similar conversion, I would sure like to chat with them.
Thanks
68Malibu Blown 406 Dec 8th, 99, 7:07 PM The ecm controls everything, the injectors are smaller than those used on a 350. You will need an ecm $100.00 and a wiring harness, as well as a place on your eng for all the sensors, and a computer controlled distributor (not from the 4.3L)

68SS396Camaro Dec 9th, 99, 4:58 AM The 4.3 tbi has a different part number than the v8 ones so I don't think I would do this. Besides you will need a intake as the tbi units don't have a standard bolt pattern and you obviously can't use the 4.3 one
68SS396Camaro Dec 9th, 99, 5:00 AM Whoops, ok I seen 4.3 v8. I don't believe they have the same type intake as your older 350 meaning I don't think the 4.3 intake will bolt on.
chev64 Dec 9th, 99, 8:32 AM MIKE, There is much more to it than the TBI unit and the intake. You need an electric fuel pump,a relay, computer, wiring harness, to name a few things. If you are looking for performance, this TBI setup is not what you want, a TPI setup is much better, if you are just looking for better driveability a TBI is good. For more complete info contact Howell Engine Development, I don't have there phone # (I couldn't find it among my mess), but I'm sure someone will post it for you. Hope this helps.
Manny Gomez Dec 9th, 99, 1:00 PM Hi Mike,
I went through similiar thoughts earlier this year when I bought a complete Camero with a TPI system. The car had been hammered in the back but it didn't hurt the engine. There are a couple of good books around that talk about the swap but my conclusion was that for me it wasn't the way to go. However if you do want to pursue it, you will need the distributor, all sensors, a wiring harness and previously mentioned items plus lots of patience. Also remember that FI engines are programed to run with a different camshaft profile so that will have to be changed as well. It's a great system and the TPI is much better than the TBI but my research concluded that either system required about the same effort and $$. mgg
Mike H Dec 9th, 99, 5:03 PM Thanks for all the info guys. I am not looking for high performance out of this, just a smoother more efficient running engine. I will be using the Elky daily come January. Thanks again. I will let you know how I make out.
halldor Dec 10th, 99, 12:12 PM Mike, it,s a waste of time and money, use your money instead on a TPI.and be sure to have all the componets,it will cost you about 400$.

chev-hell Dec 11th, 99, 6:59 AM $400 for a TPI complete is a deal from hell, generally the set up is $500, computer 120,aftermarket harness (a must have) $300,and any sensors that you may need i have been looking for a complete set up for a year now and generally is a grand before it's all said and done with (that's at the cheapest)
