: Guages making noises ?

I have a funny fluttering noise coming from under my dash area. The only things that are there are my autometer water temp and oil pressure guages. Anybody have problems with either of these making noises. It is kinda loud to be coming from the engine compartment or under the car but I guess that's possible. Could be an exhaust leak at the collector, but I don't seam to hear it outside the car....only inside.

any ideas fellas ?

Thanks for responding!

My speedo is making a different noise http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif ..always does when it gets cold outside..never in the summer. My guages are mounted under the radio and the sound is coming from that direction.

How are you supposed to fix the stupid speedo cable makin noise? I makes this really fast skeeky noise.. like lose rings or bearings or something just grinding away..

Hey 71velle,
I have a mechanical oil pressure gauge mounted under my dash. It makes an unusual fluttering noise. It always has. The reason is that it is plumbed with 1/8" copper line directly to the port at the oil filter housing. It picks up the noise and vibration from the oil pump. Think of it as one of those stethescopes used to detect inner engine noise. For the longest time, I couldn't figure out what it was until I grabbed the oil line with my hand and the sound changed tone. I reduced the noise slightly by putting a rubber grommet in the firewall where the copper tubing passes through. It's not the spedo cable if the noise is present while the car is idling in the driveway. Do you have a mechanical gauge? How and where is it plumbed?

speedr - The speedo cable just needs to be lubed..I am just to lazy to do it.

Epistuff - yeah its mechanical...I see what you mean about it being a stethscope...It's plumbed through a hole in the firewall....I thought I put a grommet in the hole but maybe it fell out. That would be to easy http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks for the replies !

If it's not your speedo, check for a leaf or other stuff in your heater fan.
