: How to bleed my power steering system?
rfender Dec 7th, 99, 9:59 AM I had my power steering pump and box rebuilt recently. According to my manual i bleed it by raising the front car, filling the pump with fuild, start the car for 2-3 seconds, shut if off and check the fuild. Repeat until the fuild remains constant with no bubbles. Then lower the car and continue to check the fuild and drive the car foward and backward about 100 feet while slow turning the wheels in both directions lock to lock. I have done this several times now and the pump still squeals. Also, the pump fills whith so many bubbles the pressure builds so much that the fuild sqirks out the small hole in the top of the cap. I need some help with this! Thanks in advance!
masterwoo Dec 7th, 99, 12:41 PM I've replaced a lot of power steering pumps in ass'd chevys, never my chevelle, mostly 4x4s. At any rate i've never gone through the procedure you described I just fill it up crank the wheels lock to lock a couple times and drive it around the block. Since the pump isnt preasurized or air tight its not super important every little bit of air is out. Next, its really important you DONT OVERFILL the pump, since its not preasurized (like brakes) that extra fluid will bubble up when the pump starts pumping and the fluid starts to 'expand' and has no place to go so to me it seems like thats why is coming out the cap. Just my thoughts.

DZAUTO Dec 7th, 99, 5:55 PM Master is right, put fluid in it (but not full), start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times. Turn it off, check the fluid and fill to proper level. You're done.

rfender Dec 8th, 99, 4:37 AM OK. I check my fittings and nothing is loose. I checked the fuild level last night and it was a little low, about a 1/4" low. Any other suggestions. Thanks!!!!
Cardiac Dec 8th, 99, 6:38 AM Did you have your pump rebuilt or replaced? Is it a generic over the counter brand pump? Did you have the box modified to a quick ratio steering box?
You may want to check the pressure relieve valve. They cost under $20 from the dealer.
If the guy down the street rebuilt it in his garage after work there may be a possibility that some debris got into the system that would normally not be present in a production enviroment.
These bubbles may be caused from the assembly grease they used to keep the little balls in place while rebuilding it, esspecially if they used axle grease. If this is the case, then the bubbles will more than likley go away in time.
Is it the pump or the belt that is squeeling?
ALSO, check the lines, they may be pinched or pluged.

rfender Dec 8th, 99, 6:48 AM I had a my orginal pump rebuilt by a professional mechanic. I will check the lines to see if they might be pinched but i don't think they are. Can i change the pressure relief valve easily? I'm going to call the mechanic that did the rebuild.
Philip Dec 8th, 99, 8:51 AM The fitting on the power steering pump, where the hi pressure hose screws into has an O ring on it, if this O ring is placed in the wrong groove it will cause pressure problems with the system. I can't remember which groove it needs to be in, but it is the one without a port in it. When you remove the fitting there will be a spring loaded valve behind it, so watch and see that you get it back in the right way.

Cardiac Dec 8th, 99, 1:58 PM Follow Philip's (64elcamino) advice. This is more than likley the culprit.

Don C Dec 9th, 99, 8:46 AM I had the same problem when I replaced the steering box. After calling Lee power steering and discussing with them the problem he advised the following. First he said it is a bleeding issue. You can determine this by using a flashlight and see if there are bubbles present while the engine is running. This was the condition on my car. The simple solution was to allow the engine to run WITHOUT turning the wheel. It took about 10 minutes of idling for the bubbles to clear after which there was no more problem.
