: To stripe or not to stripe?

That is the question....for me. I just bought a 69 SS that's triple black (vinyl roof) with 16" torque thrust II's. I say a white SS stripe down the side would look great. My wife and buddy's say NO! Does any one have a picture of a triple black 69 with a white stripe? Comments welcome.

I have a 1969 SS also and was faced with the same problem this summer. The car looks stock except I have retrofitted a cowl induction hood.(2 1/2"). althoudh it was a real pain in the a$$ getting it aligned ,overall myself and my buddy,s like it. I don,t have the vinyl top though. sorry I don,t have any pictures but I would try to see one before purchasing. good luck

I also have triple black 70 and the white stripe look great. I seen a black 70 with no stripes and the car looked like it lacked something. A white stripe on your car would finish it off. What is the original color of your car?

Most black '69 SS's I've seen have red stripes and they look good. That's my vote. von

Thanks for all of the input. I'm probably going to stripe it. It's the "Chevelle" thing to do. I think it'll look more "chevelle like" since no other GM car had that type of stripe. Original color on the car was light blue metallic with a white top & Black interior. I've never seen a 69 Chevelle with that combo either. I'm going to run into alot of opposition from friends & family over this stripe but...it's my car and they aren't Chevelle lovers either!

Jimmy P (that's my name too) I also have a triple black 69, but mine is not an SS. I purchased the white SS stripe for my car and then thought it would not look "correct" on a Malibu, especially since my car has rocker moldings. I think this thread may have changed my mind. I have about a year to think about it while I save for a paint job.

Well, guys. The stripe certainly completes the car given the right car. I have a 70 Elky SS 396 triple black with a vinyl top. As an SS it came with the stripe (not all did, but mine did) The white stripes are what really makes the car and thus the meaning of my license plate Stinky1 (aka: skunk)

And to think that my mom calling me a stinker all these years didn't make an impact. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Well, my opinion would be along the lines of originality. Despite the stripes looking great on some cars, if the car in question didn't originally have stripes and they are put on, it just isn't the same to me. I don't particularly care for it.

I am not certain what you mean by a stripe down the side...

I have seen cars the people have painted the stripes all the way over the car. Very detracting and not near as becoming. Of course, my Elky has the stripes only on the hood whereas the Chevelles had the stripes on the hood and the trunk as everyone knows.

Personal preference, I suppose.

I would say no stripes. Sorry.

Ahhh..Skunky I have a 69, in case you didn't notice, 69 SS's came with an optional stripe on the SIDE of the car. Anyway I think I came up with a great idea. Blue Bowtie... how about this. Lay on a temporary stripe with white electrical tape and cheap pin striping to see what it looks likes? That's what I'm going to do. The only way I'll know what it's going to look like.

How about a RED stripe ?

Red was an available stripe color for a black car in '69.

Stripe it. You'll be happy in the end. I have a triple green 69SS 396. Here is another piece of info... late in 69, Chevy offered a special order option of twin stripes over hood & deck. (similar to 70-72)They are dim. different. Only black & white available for color. Personally, I like the stripe. But it really is a matter of personal taste. Good luck
