My basic question is this, has anyone out there in Chevelle Land have any experience with this engine? The reason I am asking is I have a 66 Chevelle Malibu 2dr ht, I purchased brand new in April !966. I ordered the car while stationed in Germany, I did not know about the SS 396 combo at the time. I ordered mine with a 283/220 HP with a 4 speed and buckets.
I am in the process of doing a frame off in my garage attached to my home, not very popular with my wife. I have been reading all the different oppinions concerning weather to try and stay original. I am a Skip Cane (Bless Him) student and have tried to keep it original. Simplely stated I wanted more motoe that a rebuilt 283. So I purchased the PN 12355345 suffix code CC special high performance crate from GM. What troubles me is I read all these postings where guys have the ZZ3 PN10185072 motor and I never hear anything about mine. Could SOmeone shed some light on this please. Thanks for you help.

Hey Jesse,
It's a good motor! A friend of mine has one in a 64 half ton pickup and it rips! It is one excellent motor for the money. One reason why you may not hear much about the motor is in 99 they redesigned(well just changed the heads) on that style and it's now the 350/330hp motor from GM.
Good Luck with your 66!

Jesse,
I've got one of the last ones in my garage waiting to go in my 72 Malibu. I talked to someone on sunday at the Northeast Regional meet who had one in his 70 Malibu. He was very pleased with it. I'll let you know what I think when I get it in.

Hey Jesse,
I have two of them; one in my 61 Corvette and one in my 65 SS Coupe. Great motors and a good buy. Better hurry up though. GM discontinued them and replaced them with a 330HP version that is basiclly the same engine only with the new vortec heads. Still a good engine but the old intake manifolds won't interchange and the proper manifold is about $300 at my neighborhood Chevy dealer. There is still a bunch of them in the pipeline and for around $2K, I think they're a bargain. mgg (Gold # 209)
