The other day I was taking off from a stop showing some friends my ride when all of a sudden my right wheel locked up. I WAS pushing the car kinda hard. I never left first gear when the engine stalled and the back wheel locked up, leaving about a hundred foot skid mark down the road. As far as I know the oil in the engine was fine. The car still rolls in nuetral but won't start. Could this still possibly be the tranny or rear-end or did I freeze up my engine? Any help would be greatly appreciated. And If I can get the money to fix it up I'm sure I'll be a lot more careful. Thanks again.

Whoops, sounds like you better sell her to one of us fast and CHEAP!

Seriously be more specific. Did the front then the rear lock up? What kind of tranny?

Does the motor crank?

It seemed to me that the engine was running fine. It was excelerating smoothly when all of a sudden the wheel just locked up. It was kinda hard to tell what gave way first, the engine or the locked up wheel. I just bought the car and really don't know that much about it. The car is a 70 SS 396 and the tranny is a four speed manual. The engine won't crank over at all. You can hear the starter engage but it doesn't pull anything over. Need anymore help? Thanks

Well, if you jack up the back and rotate the suspected frozen wheel with the tranny in neutral does the wheel turn?

If like you said "it rolls in neutral" then the rearend and trans are probably OK. Take the valve covers off and look for bent or broken valves or pushrods. BBlks are notorious for broken valve springs. Before you turn the engine, back off all the rocker arms and check to see if all valves are the same height. If so, disconnect the battery, remove the sparkplugs and try to rotate the engine by the crank bolt. Don't force it. If it doesn't turn, remove the starter and try again by hand. If it still won't turn you've probably damaged something internal.

Aviator, you better check the "for sale" ads on this site and take at look at my posting for my 396. It sounds like you launched the motor. A dead stop like that usually, gulp, means you broke a major part and probably shattered a cyl wall. Gosh I hope it's something else, but if it rolls in neutral I think you may have a boat anchor under the hood.

Hey man, don't sweat it. It's happened to many of us before!
