I am considering purchasing one of those kits that convert a conventional points distributer to electronic. Being my car is totally original, and being restored same, I am not sure if I should go with it. However I do know the benifits are worth it.
1) Should I change my original set up? Will it really matter so much as far as originality is concerned?
2) If I do decide who makes the best conversion kit.

richr,
Do a search on Pertronix with DZAUTO as the username. This will provide you with EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know about Pertronix. They have a new model out that you don't have to r&r the distributor to add the conversion kit.

Rich, I would think it depends on how you use your car. If it is driven a lot yes do it, but if you drive a few thousand miles a year keep it original. Just check the points before heading out on a long cruise and carry an extra set with you.

I just ordered my Pertronix Lobe Sensor Ignitor from Summit. It looks too easy to install, I can't believe it.

The old points set up weren't all that reliable in the first place. Even if you just drive the car occasionally you'll be better off with a conversion. mgg

Richard,
Just my opinion... my 73 Z-28 has the original setup. The points, cap and rotor are at least 6 years old. I went out yesterday and started the beast up and went for a ride. It was about 20 degrees and the car had not been run in at least 2 weeks, the old small block fired off after about 2 revolutions. Don't get me wrong, electronic ignition is great, very little maintainance, but I personally think I could find better things to spend my money on. Now if you have a modified motor, lots of compression etc, it may be worth it, but to do it just for the sake of it...not sure. By the way, my 71 Chevelle still has the "old" point setup...it's been 12.50's ..also a small block 4 speed car.
Like I said, just my opinion http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
