I'm putting the interior back in my 69. Wondering if the floor shifter assembly (horseshoe shaped automatic shifter) is supposed to mount on top of the carpet and underlayment, or if it is supposed to mount metal-to-metal on the floor pan. The screws that were in the car holding the shifter down are long enough to go through the carpet and underlayment, but I have no confidence that they are the original screws.

In the assembly manual illustration it appears that the shifter is mounted to the metal. That's how I've done it in the past. Then cut the carpet to fit around it.

Take the top off and remove the shifter. The mounting points can be marked once you position the console in the correct spot. Then use a box knife to make only the necessary cuts.
