I am getting ready to replace my entire dash assembly and am a little unsure on what is involved in dropping the column? I have a good feeling with the column a little lower it will be MUCH easier to get the dash in & out.
I have been told all you have to do is unbolt the two bolts on the column right below the dash but am not sure.
Please someone elaborate on how to drop the column
.
Thanks

okay right under the column there will be 2 bolts that you will clearly see if you get under the dash just loosen the bolts up and the column wil slide down them i took the bolts out and rested the column on the seat. it makes the dash 10X easier to get out. the bolts are located right under the dash. (closest toward the wheel i think they're 1/2inch maybe 9/16ths. good luck!

You don't need to disconnect anything under the hood, just remove those two bolts and thats it? Is it just as easy to get the column back on?
Just a little freaked i will break it or something.

Nothing under the hood needs to be disconected. You do not have to remove the steering column bolts all the way. Just turn them out all the way to the end of the stud. This should give you enough remove to wiggle the cluster out without having the steering column flopping all over the place.

timc is right but i just took the bolts all the way out because it got the column compleatly out of the way but nothing under the hood has to be disconected

Ok so just the bolts on the column not the nuts that face up. I was thinking it was the two nuts that had to be undone, i will give it a go.
Thanks a lot.!!!

It's not two bolts...It's two nuts and one bolt. All three are 9/16. The bolt might have a spacer under it. They did this in 68 to make the column go "straight" through to the steering box. You might also want to disconnect the wires to the turn signal switch if you drop the column, so they don't pull out....

Ok, i will disconnect the wires for the turn signal. I am planning on doing this this weekend so i will go check it out and see.

If you have a column shift there is a little wire that connects the column to the gear indicator. It is secured with a screw. You need to undo this or you'll break the wire.

It was an original column shift, but it has been converted to floor (before i bought it) and there is no dial there just a black spot.
