: Console Install Pics/Tranny Hump
sapperox Oct 18th, 03, 11:09 AM Does anyone have pics of a console and shifter in different positions installed? I have a 68 velle I am converting from bench to buckets(who doesn't) and I'm trying to figure out exactly where the shifter and console bolts down.
Also, I read some old posts about switching to a console and needing a new tranny hump. Is that necessary? Mine is in such beautiful shape I would rather not mess with it!
Thanks Again!

Bill Rose Oct 18th, 03, 2:46 PM If you are planning on having a console you must have the correct hump, otherwise the console won't sit on the floor correctly. You can have buckets without a console if you don't want to tackle the hump change. I've seen what is involved with changing the hump and if your fairly good with a few tools it's not a big job. Once the old hump is ripped out, place the new hump so the shifter is in the middle and tack it in a couple spots, then check to be sure you can shift thru all the gears and reverse. Then tack it all the way around. Some seam sealer around the welds and your set...Bill
sapperox Oct 18th, 03, 3:48 PM Where would I get a new hump? I don't see any seams in the existing floor pan where I would be able to remove it without cutting. I have a mig welder and a recip. saw so I imagine I could do the work, but I still don't see why that's necessary. The console and shifter sit rather nicely on it right now, and there are even dimples in the metal that match the holes where I have the shifter sitting.
I bought the car without an interior and I assume there was a bench seat because I had to install brackets for the buckets. Take a look at the floorpan pics on my website and tell me what I'm missing...I've already put down sound deadner and painted the floor, I would hate to have to start tearing stuff down again without a damn good reason. Thanks again!
sapperox Oct 18th, 03, 3:50 PM Forgot to mention this is for an Automatic...
Elree Colby Oct 18th, 03, 4:05 PM Are you going with an automatic? If so no need to change the hump. Just cut hole for shift cable, dimple in the flattened area is center for shift cable hole, and place the shifter If your floor is still bare as shown in one of your pics. You can see two dimples that are the locations of the front console mount holes. I can see one in the pic. Start by bolting the console in these holes the rest can be determined from there.

72ElCaminoSS Oct 19th, 03, 2:02 AM Hey, new guy here
So, if you're using an automatic, you don't have to change the humps? I have never heard of having to change humps (maybe cause I have an auto.).
Anyway, I have a bench seat in my 72 Elky SS. I have a turbo 400 and am planning on going to buckets with a console.
So, I only need to make a place for the shifter cable? I heard I also need to weld a bracket for the console?
I guess the best thing would be if someone had some install pics like in the original post in this thread.
jocww Oct 19th, 03, 6:55 PM cant u just change the console? save u a lot of time and work
sapperox Oct 20th, 03, 8:17 AM Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't seen any pics so far so I will make sure to take plenty of mine as I work on it!
Thank god I didn't have to cut up my floor pan...that might have sent me back to the bench.
Dean Oct 20th, 03, 10:51 AM Mark,
Don't know about 68s but when I did my 70 there were factory dimples in the floor pans marking where the screws go for the shifter and console brackets.

The trans humps for a 4-speed w/o console and w console are different so if you change from auto to 4-speed the floor hump should be changed, it can J-rigged. If changing from 4-speed no console to 4-speed w console the hump needs to be changed. Restoration suppliers like Ground Up have the replacement stamped sheet metal "tranny tunnel pan".
Yes you also need to install a bracket for the rear console mounting.
sapperox Oct 20th, 03, 6:18 PM I bought the bracket from Classic Muscle today. $16.00, but you could probably make one out of some scrap sheet metal that would work just as good...
Dean Oct 20th, 03, 9:34 PM This may or may NOT be of help but here is a picture I shot of my car today
(Either my Ricoh digital camera kinda sucks or I do at photography) http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/Dean/70_shifter_measure.jpg
