The Heavy Chevy was introduced the middle of 1971.

special understated black grille
A standard SS hood w/lock pins (not cowl ind)
Special side striping
14" X 6" rally-type wheels w/center caps

It was only available with a V8 engine
The 307 is standard, but the other V8's were available.

other options:

tach and gauges, with clock, Positraction rear axle, wide-ratio 4-Speed transmission and power disc/drum brakes.

Dave,
I have a 71 Heavy Chevy that I purchased new in Aug 1971 (boy am I dating myself), I don't claim to be an expert on them but have first hand knowledge. The Heavy Chevy was basically a cheap SS. No chrome, no carpet etc. But as far as I know if you ordered one you could get any available option you wanted. It does appear that the interior is a one of a kind as I have never seen another 71 or 72 (the only years for the Heavy Chevy) with the same upholstery. The door panels are also different. Mine came with a 350 with Q-jet, trans was a three speed with floor shift. There were not very many made as far as I know. If you have any other questions, e-mail me as I have most of the factory documentation for the car. Let me know if you have any luck finding upholstery material !

The Heavy Chevy was a cheapened SS. It came out in 1971 and I think it was still available in 72. The Heavy Chevy (RPO YF3) came standard with a black grill, the SS domed hood and lock pins, 14X6 Ralley Wheels with brite lug nuts, special body stripes and decals and thats it. The engines ranged from the 307 to the 400 big block (but not the same engine as the SS had). Cowl induction was available as a option BUT without the stripe kit. Any other Chevells option was available for extra cost. More often then not though these were low priced and had few options.

I HAVE A HEAVY CHEVY, IT CAME WITH FRONT WHEEL DISK AND BENCH SET. 350 ENGINE AND AUTOTRANS. THESE CARS WERE MADE BECAUSE OF THE INCREASING INSURANCE PRICES THEN ON THE SPORTS CARS. THE STRIPES WERE ONLY BLACK OR WHITE

I have a 71 Heavy Chevy. I found the build sheet under the bottom part of the back seat.My car came from the factory with the 350/350 engine tranny combo. They were available with engines ranging from the 307 up to the 402 big block. My factory assembly manual says that the YF3(Heavy Chevy) option came with the SS hood (not cowl induction), body side stripes, Heavy Chevy decals on both front fenders and the hood and deck lid and 14X6 ralley wheels. My car had no other emblems other than the Chevrolet emblem on the lower right hand corner of the blacked out grill. I have seen some of these cars that have the trim rings around the headlights blacked out as mine does, and I have also seen some where this was not done.
I hope this information helps. If you have any questions feel free to Email me.(shepardt@iname.com)

I have a 72 Heavy Chevy. My research reveals that it originally came with a 165 horse 350 ci. I believe they only came with a bench seat. They came with very ugly rally wheels, special side striping (for a pic see the Year One ad behind the cover page of the newest Super Chevy magazine or any Year One catalog under the decal section). I believe they came only with V 8's but I know for a fact that in order to get the 454 in 1972 you had to get the SS. I believe the biggest V8 offered in a Heavy Chevy in 72 was a 400ci ( or is it a 402ci?) I also know they came with virtually no chrome emblems and they had a very ugly wood trim type interior. I too am looking to replace my interior with the original type but I have not found a company that offers it. My car has the blacked out headlight ring but I cannot say for certain that somebody didnt paint it that way but it looks original. They came with blacked out grill and hood pins but I believe you could not get the cowl induction package. Although I cannot be certain that my car is all original it has/had an automatic transmission with positrac, bench seat , power steering, AC, AM radio and standard non guage equipped dash. Basically they are a stripped down version of the SS and in my humble opinion are pretty ugly. But that is what makes them cool, I think. Everybody it seems wants an SS or is making an SS clone. Thats OK with me and I even thought about doing it but the more I thought about it the more I realised how neat it would be to have something that almost no one else has. I think that they made only about 5,700 Heavys in 1972 so I figure mine is pretty rare as far as Chevelles go. Even if the resale value does not reflect that. I too am trying to put mine back in original appearing condition as possible and I would love to gain/ share info with anyone on these very different cars. If any and all would please give me their e mail # I would greatly appreciate it.
Hope this helps
Michael
