: Remote Solenoid

I picked up a F**d Solenoid today as I'm getting ready to mount the battery in the trunk with a Master Disconnect switch and a Remote Solenoid.

The question is which of the small terminals is the "I" terminal. Mine aren't marked as to I or S.

Looking down on from the top it would be Large Terminal on Left, Small Terminal upper Left, Small Terminal upper right, and Large Terminal Right.

What will happen if I have the I and S terminals reversed. Can I try it without frying anything and just reverse them if it doesn't work?

Take a section of wire and hook it up to the positive terminal of the battery.

Then hold the solenoid so that the metal mounting tabs are touching the negative terminal.

Touch the end of the wire to one of the small terminals and then to the other.

The terminal that causes the solenoid to "click" is the "s" terminal.

By the way, don't use this type relay in a constant "ON" state. It will burn out!

If you need something like this, you need what is called a "latching" relay.

Thanks Wes. I'll check it today.

It's for the starter so that's not a constant on so it should be ok. I printed the tech reference on wiring the solenoid already.

I was afraid that you may be using the solenoid as a "voltage disconnect" in the trunk!

When you go to do the wiring, go to a welding supply shop to buy the heavy gauge wire that has to run from the trunk to the front. They should also have the terminals there.

Thanks Again Wes. I just finished bolting everything to an inch thick piece of sheet plastic for a nice compact (Neat) look. I went from the battery to the master disconnect to the F**d Solendoid, then ran a 4 ga. and two 16 ga. wires to the front. Tommorrow I'll wire up a junction block under the hood to go to the starter.

P.S. I've ID'd the S terminal now.
Thanks again.
