I was wondering how well the pre-molded carpet fits when you dont reuse the sound deadener..My car was originally an air conditioned car so it had a ton of sound deadener that I dont want to replace when I put the new carpeting in.. Thanks, Tony

The main problem I had with my 69 automatic was the carpet seemed to be for a 4 speed hump and set up off the trans tunnel so high I had to add extra padding under it in that area

Hoffbug, I'm doing the carpet/sound deadener in my 70 Chevelle right now.
I was told the molded carpet fits great but without the sound deadener it tends to bunch up and slip around after a while. You are supposed to let it sit in the sun unfolded awhile before laying it in.
As an alternative to the tar-paper repop stuff, here is what I did.
A local custom shop buys this adhesive-backed sound deadener. Looks like Dynomat, but comes in 3 foot x 4 foot rolls. Soft, flexible, molds to the contours of the floor with a heat gun.
I'm getting a way better $$ rate per square foot than what the thumpin-stereo crowd pays.
Anyways, this shop uses this stuff on custom pro-street cars, big block muscle cars or anything else that will either be loud or get floor pan work.
If you aren't doing floor pan work, don't remove the tar paper.

OOPS. looks like I should learn to type. I obviosly meant CARPET not capet http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
DG. I did remove all of the tarpaper stuff already.I wanted to inspect the floor pan and I am Having a rollbar installed. We have to cut through the floorPan to tie into the frame. After the bar is installed the car is getting painted.
I'm going to run out of good weather after all of that is done ( low of 28 degrees last night) so I will be redoing the interior next spring. carpet, new seat upholstery, and maybe a new headliner.

i don't know if you plan on crusing, racing or a little of both, but. the heat and noise especialy with headers is a bit__. I'VE SEEN INSULATION that looks like a heavy foil that might work for you. i bought the thick tar material but i wish i had gone for the better stuff.

i had the same problem as dean with mine. it also didn't fit rigth in the rear corners, but i fixed it with some extra padding. those corners may not be a problem with a chevelle though.
