: all these custome dash posts got me motivated
Hot66ss Dec 8th, 02, 10:52 AM Heres a pic of my work in progress, I'm almost done, notice the shift light where the head light switch was, still have to put a few things back on it, a few touch ups and detaling + adding all my nitrous switches and lighter in on the panel on top of the heater controls (where my headlight switch now is. this thing started out as a $15 junk yard dash that was covered in mudd in the back of an elky. VERY time consuming project that had me thinking at times, what was i thinking???? I will post more pics when its 100% done and in the car. the little holes that are by the big gauges are for the factory turn singal and idot light inserts, i am in the middle of fabbing up small boxes to hold the lights, will look factory when its done http://members.aol.com/chvellss/dash.jpg
EDIT
and heres a close up of the shift light

Looks great. I've been hesitant to cut my dash, but you may have motivated me to look for a test mule. 2 questions. 1-What size are your gauges. 2- Is the flat piece for the speedo/tach plastic? OK 3 - How did you "weld/glue" that piece in place? Is it reinforced?

Hot66ss Dec 8th, 02, 12:50 PM Rick, this dash was mangled when I got it unless I would have not cut it up. The speed and tach are 3 3/8 the water temp and oil pressure are 2 5/8, the volts fuel and trans temp are 2 1/16....... all the pieces are plastic. The plastic is jb welded to the dash, 8 tubes worth, they aint going anywhere. I filed the whole for the shift light so perfect that it fits in there tight, put also used a double thick piece of plumbers tape to hold it in place, one end screwed to the light the other to a threaded hole where the original cluster bolted in.

BB_Mike Dec 8th, 02, 2:39 PM Is that not a 71-71 dash? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif
I like the shift light location! But where's the new light switch location?
Let me know what lamps you decide on for the turn signals and such. I see the cut outs. If you find some way to do the Arrows or High-Beam indicator, you'd be my hero. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Have you considered swapping the fuel and volts? I'd think seeing the fuel level would be more important, and for a stock 71 steering wheel, most of the area is clock while driving straight. I think.... couldbe wrong on that.
Looks good! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

70 dash is the same as 71-72.... I am going to play with gauge locations according to view when the dash is in the car. I am your hero because I figured it out. what you do it glue the little piece of film that says oil. hot, bright whatever behind the "viewing hole. the you have a little plastic box made with one side of the box being open, glue the open side so it fits over and around the idiot light film, drill a hole and stock a light in the back of the box, walla......
Edit.... oh yeah the headlight switch is mounted on the plate above where the heater controls go (look closely at the pic)

RAMBO Dec 9th, 02, 7:58 PM Wow- looks killer! love the 2 tone paint too!
Hey, this may be a stupid question, but how did all you guys with the custom dashes hook up the turn lights & idiot lights in the new dash?
Did you just find the right wires in the old wiring harnes and cut them off, and then mount new ones or what?
Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't all the stock idiot lights in 70-72 run off the circut board, or are the bulbs connected directly to wires in the wiring harness?(like 68-69?)
Just wondering...

It's a wiring harness terminates in bulb-groups. The lamp groups (2 total) plug into the dash, and there are little cardboard squares to seperate the luminocity. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif
Tom, aka Hero. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Why not just put the shift light over there above the heater controls? too big? Have you seen that guy light up at night? Bright than Vegas! I'm going with the pin-light sized shift light. Street car guys with those shift lights leave a cover on them to lessen the candela. -I'm all over the key words today. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
That extra box thing is pretty neat. Still leaves the "arrowed" turn signals unsolved. Or did you cut triangles in the custom face plate?
Someone on TC had the idea to do like you've done, but use the ability to print to transparensies (sp?) as a mean to make the gells (colored inserts).

Cable Dec 15th, 02, 8:11 PM Where did you get the paint for the dash. I have the same color interior in my '70 Elco. I always thought the stock dash color and dash pad were too dark compared to the carpet, doorpanels, etc.
Did you use the same exact paint for both the dash plastic and the pad? Or did you use the same color, but different paint for each?
Also, where did you get the plastic for the gauges/stereo panel themselves? It looks great in the flat black.
How are you going to support the stereo? I noticed it isn't in the stock location. Looks to me that you would need sometype of support to hold it up.

Cable Dec 15th, 02, 11:06 PM But was the exact same paint used on both the dash plastic AND the dash pad?
You would think you would need something alittle different for the pad because of flexing, etc.
Did you have a exterior paint (body paint) mixed, or something else?
