I just installed my solenoid and it doesnt work. does the metal mounting tabs need to be grounded? when I jump the termanals the wire frys touching a ground wire.

i had to ground mine,should be able to run a hot wire to s terminal and make it crank if its grounded

You say "remote" are you talking about a remote solenoid such as adding a Ford type solinoid ?
If so, the mounting tabs shouldn't need to be grounded.
There should be two small terminals that actuate the Ford solenoid, one goes to ground and the other is connected to the "S" terminal where the purple wire connects to the GM solenoid.

I have never had to do this as it is like fixing the symptom instead of the problem to me but I think that is how it would be connected.

The mounting tabs on a GM solenoid are gounded to the starter.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong

A ford solenoid has to have the mounting flange grounded!
