Should I use white Paint for the lettering around by Bezels. Lettering such as..."Wipers" "Lights" "Lighter" "Ignition".

Is there a special paint to use? Anyone done this before? Thanks, Dave

Dave

Although not techically original I restored
my bezel letters by 1st respraying the entire
bezel black. Then for the lettering
I bought a can of silver spray paint and sprayed some into a small cup and daubed a cigarette filter in the paint. Silver flows real well and the filter will soak some up in it. Use the butt to paint on the raised letters. Its so flat that it will only put the silver paint on the raised letters.
It works real well and looks like new.You can sorta see it in this pic http://home.hot.rr.com/importtech/chevelle/dash.jpg

A simpler way to do that, is to buy a Testors paint pen at your local hobby store, you can get it in Chrome Silver, it's perfect for doing raised letters on a dash bezel, and much more effecient than a cup of paint and a cigarette butt!

One step better is to do it with silver leaf, available at craft stores like Micheal's. It's not any harder to, but will give a real chrome appearance. Great for the lettering, but probably would take more expertise to do the area around the speedo/gauges. the trim around the radio /heater controls/vent is do-able though.

The cigarette butt method works best for me.
I also later detailed the steering wheel as well and it looks pretty good IMO. However you do it have patience.
good luck

I like Jacks suggestion: a cigarette butt dabbed in paint..it doesn't get any simpler
or effecient then that. A minute later and you are done! When ever I'm up to my armpits in a project the last thing I want to do is drop everthing, close up the shop, wash up and put some semi decent clothes on, get in the car and drive to the store to get something your out of, pay, go home, put your work clothes back on and head back to the shop and start again an hour later.

See, you buy the paint pen befor you start your project, or does that mean I need to change my clothes, go buy a pack of cigs, come home, change my clothes, or better yet, what does changing all those clothes have to do with anything, if the butt was so easy, what are you going to do with the butt when your done, and what about the paint in the cup, don't know about you, but when I'm done, I just put the cap back on the pen.

If you think about what a pack of cigarettes cost. You might be better off getting the dash rechromed. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Bill

For us non-smokers, try using the tip of a pencil eraser to apply the Testors silver. I redid my dash by first painting it black then dabbing the silver on the worded areas and other highlighted spots on the dash. Came out very nice... and much cheaper than the $400 it would have cost to rechrome it.

One thing i like about using the paint pen is i keep it in the colsole for touchup

I'll throw in my $.02 here... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
The paint pen is very nice & works good- **BUT** it is easy to get a little too much paint out and have it run off into the groove next to the part your are painting- especially when doing the lettering!

For the lettering- I'd use the cigarette or erasor head- For the guage trim- i'd use the paint pen. Go slow & Take your time!

I would really like to tryout the gold leaf stuff for my next project... Have to see how it works! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I can get to look like a pig pen when I work, esp body work....so I change before getting into the daily driver. When your done with the butt & paint I'd throw them away Rocky.
