I have a comfort grip wheel and a nos horn button and installation kit. I am wondering if I need a spring between the horn button and the hub as there isn't one in the kit. Thanks, Mike W. graemlins/clonk.gif

I recently replaced the steering wheel in the wife's '70 Chevelle, with a cushion grip like you have. There is not a spring between the horn button and the hub. There is a single piece that gets screwed onto the hub that has two rings on it -- one on top of the other, separated by a small space. The two rings are very close together -- one of them touches the contact pin at all times. When you press the horn button, it pushes the top ring, which makes contact with the bottom ring, which makes the horn sound. This piece (with the two rings) is also what the horn button pops on to. Make sure you disconnect the horn before putting this all together, otherwise things are gonna get noisy. Also figure on having to make some adjustments on that ring I mentioned. Awhile back I drove the car on a pretty hot day and the metal expanded on that ring, causing the two rings to constantly touch, blowing the horn at everybody. I used a small screwdriver and made the space between the two rings wider. No problems since.

Now, there is a small spring that goes in before the contact "pin" does. If you have the same kit that I bought, the contact pin is included and is 1" in length with a lip on one end and had to be cut down to 3/4" in length for a '70 setup. If you don't have a '70, I believe you leave the length of that pin at 1", but there should be a piece of paper that included in the kit that tells you exactly. Hope that helps ... and hope I didn't confuse you. :D

There's very little give when you push the horn button. Doesn't take much at all to make the horn sound.
