: What can I get for 6,000 ??
Timmy Aug 5th, 99, 7:56 PM Hi, I am new to Chevelles and love the '66. I am looking into maybe getting one (or maybe a '67). My question is: what kind of car can I get for around $6,000 cash. I do not care about matching numbers and originality really, but would like a nice clean car. I am heading to Hot August Nights tomorrow to see what I find and try and sell my '70 Camaro. Thanks for any help.

67_454_Hardtop Aug 5th, 99, 8:07 PM For $ 2700 I bought my 67 Malibu hardtop. The body was in great shape and extremely straight. The paint was also in good shape. The interior was pretty bad but that was easy to fix with all new upulstery. My car also came with a 454 and a turbo 400.I guess that i got a good deal but if you look you can probably find a very nice car for 6000
skunkynuggets Aug 5th, 99, 8:26 PM First off, welcome to the site.
For $6000, you should be able to find a clean and straight turn-key car with a decent paint job, decent motor and clean interior.
For that money, I would not buy any car that shows signs of rust, has a marginal interior and/or has a marginal motor and driveline.
That's alot of money and if you are patient and can bargain well, you'll be able to find a really nice car

Hot66ss Aug 5th, 99, 8:30 PM I picked up my 67 for 5,000 it is my daily driver. it is a real clean car. buckets, console, new carpet, A/C, quick ratio steering, 336 12 bolt posi, 80% new big block suspension, front disc, ralleys, new tires, a clean little 283 with a holley 600, performer rpm, mild cam, new alternator, water pump, radiator, timing chain, ac compersor, heads all redone etc etc. the motor has never been rebuilt but was well maintaned. (just turned 100,000)
Now the problems.
HAD slight rust in the trunk
the rear window leaks (starting of rear window rust not bad though just dime sized hole) FIXED now
buckets started to tear at the seam (FIXED NOW)
the 283 (has top end but no bottom)
the paint looks real nice from about 20 feet away but has some chipping and scratches up close, also the passanger side lower fender has a small rust area (THANKS GM) (will be fixed soon)
has very very minor scrape on the driver side fender
getting to the point the breaks pads are a little worn
vinyl top has some cracks
the powerglide needs to go, will be replaced by a th350 soon
that's what I got for $5,000........... you should be able to pick up a pretty clean driver for $6,000
I was going to put a real nice paint job on it but I decided not to because it goes in parking lots and I don't want to end up in jail if someone scratches it.
When I am done I will have about 8 in it and have a REAL nice driver with a mild 350. etc
I think I got a fare deal??????????
That's my story
I have my weekend 66 if I get the BIG BLOCK BUG! (will be up soon)

crank64 Aug 5th, 99, 8:38 PM About 3 years ago my father picked up a 67 malibu from a guy that was the son of the original owner. the car was almost perfect. The paint was about 4 years old but in great shape. The interior was all replaced with stock interior. It had a clean 350/350 with about 350 poinies, rally wheeles and almost all new GM trim. The son worked for GM and replaced everthing with original parts. Now this was a great deal but they are out there.
The car you want should at least have Newer paint/body, interior, engine, and trans. With nothing major wrong. The price can varry with a show paint job or hipo engine. But over all the car should be in great shape.I have bought several mulibu's over the last 5 years and always paid about 5 to 6 grand for them, with nothing to do on them.

JWagner Aug 5th, 99, 9:03 PM For 6k you should be able to get a really excellent car as a starting point. By that I mean that you should get a car that has an excellent body with zero rust and most other things in very good condition. Do not worry a about the things that can be fixed easily and cheaply , such as seat upholstery, worn wheel bearings, brakes ,etc. That stuff is merely changing out parts. You will have an advantage if you seek a car in a large rust free city such as Los Angeles. I live in Tucson (pretty small place) and there are not many old cars. The few that we have are generally pretty good, but the prices are high.Happy Hunting.
Timmy Aug 5th, 99, 10:53 PM Thanks guys, that helps. I wasnt sure what I could get after only finding a few on TraderOnline and half of those were fifteen thousand dollar cars. I would still love to hear what anybody else has to say, any more advice etc. Also I have been hearing that people are marking there cars up a grand or so just to sell at Hot August Nights. How much can you usually get a car for? I mean if I am gonna spend all 6K, in what range of asking prices should I be looking?
Thanks again.

Timmy,
Get a good feel for what is advertised in a printed form, such as the Traders post. But figure for some inflated pricing.
I think for $6k you could find a pretty good deal. I agree with every body about steel. Most expensive thing to fix, if you are not in the business.
I know of several 70-72 SS(??) Chevelles locally (Dayton, Ohio) that I could have had for around $5k, if I had the cash. I ended up with a $3500 Malibu with a late model engine/trans and decent steel.

Gene Chas Aug 7th, 99, 9:58 PM Timmy, welcome. Check out the "how to buy a car" section. I think it's in tech ref or resto tips.
I probably paid too much, but I live in an area that doesn;t see many unrestored cars. For 5500 I picked up a 67. Body is OK with no major rust, it needed mechanical updates like brakes, engine was fresh 396, interior was very good, but needed some POR and tar pads. He was asking 7800.
Out in sunny CA 6000 would get you a car with a bit better body. My 67 is appraised at 7900 sice it's still in need of restificiation. Right now I wouldn't sell for anything less than $7000. So if you want to see a 7K 67 check the post " How and where to post a pic" in Bench Racing.
