I am considering buying Goodyear polyglass tires to replace the BF Goodrich TA Radials on my 70 SS396. I am doing this for originality purposes, but I have heard that these tires are terrible if you plan to actually drive the car. I would like to hear how people that have them like them. Thanks.

Well, you won't win any road races, but for cruising and straight line bursts, they work fine. We had a set of Goodyear radials on our '69 Yenko Camaro, but replaced them with the Polyglass tires. It won't handle quite as well, but it gets better straight line traction. Muscle Car Review even did a test that pitted the Polyglass against regular radials. Believe it or not, the Polyglass had a quicker 60 foot time! Now, they aren't the performers that the Drag Radials are, but they aren't that bad either. Just depends what you want them for.

Dave,
I think they are fine. They are quiet and ride smooth.Best of all they ad a real vintage look to any musce car that calls for them.I have them on my LS6 and believe it or not they handle the power quite well.

I have the polyglas on my 69 SS and they look great but I'm not happy about the way the handle on the road. Oddly enough, I was thinking of replacing them with BF Goodrich TA's. If you want the original look go with the polyglas, if not, I'd keep nice radials on the car. Consider two sets of tires/rims for the car. One for show, one for cruising. Just a thought.

Thanks for the advice. I have decided to wait until winter when the car is garaged to have the polyglas tires put on. I might as well keep the TA's on for the rest of the summer. I apprecaite the responses.

I had Goodyear Polyglas G70-14's on my elky which appeared to be original. Sadly enough on the way home from a show, the right rear tire had the tread peel off with fortunatly no damage done to the car. We currently have BF Goodrich Radial TA's on the car but just got two repop'd Goodyear Polyglas G70-14's to replace the ones that went bad in the rear. Only bad thing about the bias ply's that I have seen was that taking a curve off an exit ramp at about 55 mph is STRONGLY NOY advised as the car wanted to continue straight. Other than that, they are a great tire and really add to the vintage of the car. We are doing the thing mentioned about having a set of driving rims/tires and show rims/tires for concourse shows. Best of both worlds. Down side to bias ply repro tires is that we only found two places that had them and they were $165 or so a tire  . The price you pay for originality graemlins/sad.gif But thats the game you play when you have an antique.

I am having a hard time finding anyone that sells the Goodyear polyglass tires. Does anyone have a contact?

Also, how do you think that they compare to the Firestone wide ovals which also came on these cars?

Thanks,

Doug

A lot of the places that sell reproduction chevelle parts sell the polyglass tires.

My 66 has the original bias ply tires, I think the car drives just fine.
This is very important listen up.......
If the front end on your car is nice and tight and aligned correctly,
then polyglass or bias ply tires are just fine.
But.............if your car has older worn front end parts or is not aligned
or even just slightly worn out, the bias ply tires will be a nightmare and you will be one of the guys that cuss and swears about how bad bias ply tires are.
Moral of the story is if you want to drive your car with bias or poly glass
you need to go all the way and make sure the front of your car is done right.

Why does this thread keep coming back from the dead??
This thread originated in 1999, then was brought back to life in 2004, and 2005.

Then some guy who signs up on the Chevelle site wants to sell a poly tire from a 1977 FORD brings it back to life again.

Go away FORD guy who only signed up to sell a tire. come back when you want to talk about Chevelles.
