Hi,
What size and length bolts do you use to mount a small block on an engine stand, and do they need to be grade 8? TIA

The size is 3/8 16, grade three is OK, but that length deal is damn near impossible for me to figure out!
It would be different for every different engine stand.
Measure the the stand offs on the engine stand head, then add 1 inch, that should work.

Use grade 5 bolts. Reason: Grade 8 bolts are stronger but brittle. A grade 5 bolt will yield (i.e., bend or stretch) where the grade 8 will break (you don't want your engine on the garage floor, do you?).

Tino,
Grade 5. The bolt needs to go at least as deep as the diameter of the bolt, in this case 3/8. Unless you have an aluminum block, then you need to be as deep as possible.

What a waste of money. Grade 5 bolts!
Let me put this in perspective, 1 rat plus a complete Mercruiser water system sitting on my Snap-On engine stand, weighs damn near a 1000 pounds. Grade 3 bolts. Never lost one, off a stand any way.
I reccommend you spend you money on the motor and not the bolts that hold it on the stand.
