The Jesel belt drive is nice stuff. You can adjust cam timing in a minute , without having to pull the timing cover. Drawback to this is doesn't last as long as a chain. Its more for racing applications(MHO). For average street engines I would go with a quality timing Chain. Never had any experience with the gear drives but, I think they sound pretty cool.

I usually run double roller chains, I put gear drives in 2 of my cars and I wont do it again, noise just gets too annoying when driving for any length of time.

You don't always have to get the noisy gear drives, look in Summit Racing's catalogs, you can choose from either quite or noisy....

I had the Edelbrock gear drive in my car also. That was the first thing that I changed just after I bought it. Too Noisy. True double roller is the way to go. I can hear the motor noise and the muncie 4 speed whine now. Couldn't with the gear drive. I still have the gear drive if anyone is interested.
It is just collecting dust.

Is it true that gear drives are hard on the valve train and accelerate the wear factor? I have only heard this on the street but never actually talked to anyone who had experience with the problem. Anyone else ever hear the same?

I installed the Quiet Pete Jackson - really annoying whine that is not quiet by any length, just a little quieter than the noisy gear drive. I usually buy a Cloyes True Roller double row chain and forget about it.

Wes, there are some that say iron cams are subject to being broken by the torsional loads transmitted from the crank through a gear drive, not a problem with steel roller cams. I liked the reasoning here, but I don't know of any big pile of broken iron cams laying around anywhere.

Of course, I 've never seen anybody leave one of the things in their engine long enough to have any problems. Too noisy.

Tom (IMHO, YMMV, all that. To each his own.)

yeah, call me a 60/70s reject, but I like to hear the symphony of my solid lifters.
