I've replaced my Saginaw with an M21. The only difference is which side the speedo cable mounts on. It originally was on the drivers. Needless to say the M21 is on the pass side. Does anyone know the part# of a new correct cable or another way to fix? Thanks

The 65-later Muncies all have the speedo on the pass side. What you need is a cable/housing for the year model of your car with a Muncie tranny. I would expect that any of the major parts houses, such as NAPA, would carry such an animal. I would recommend that first you determine how much more length you need (allow for plenty of curvature in the housing to go over to the other side), then remove the cable housing from the car and take it with you for comparison. I have always gone to a local speedo shop and had mine made to the needed length.

Is the only difference between a Saginaw and a Muncie where the speedo cable goes?

Bill,
They are 2 totally different transmissions.
The Muncie is an all aluminum case and the Saginaw is cast iron. Reverse is in the tailhousing of a muncie and inside the maincase of a Saginaw. The Saginaw gears are not as heavy and durable as a Muncie and will not hold up to a strong SB or a BB. Muncies up to 1970 and all Saginaws had the smaller output shaft and in 1971 Muncies went to the bigger output shaft the same size as a turbo 400. A Saginaw, in my and most people's opinion, is OK behind NOTHING stronger than a 2bl 350. IT IS NOT A PERFORMANCE 4SP. The average value of a Saginaw is between $0 and $100. Read: "you almost can't give them away". If a Saginaw needs to be rebuilt, it won't pay for itself.

Just for the record, I have an early '65 M21 Muncie with the speedometer cable on the drivers side. This is a close ratio box with the smaller diameter cluster gear shaft.

Bob,
That is probably correct. On Muncies, the left side speedo was 63-64 and then changed to the right in 65. But, as has been observed about many variations over the years, it is very likely that early 65 cars did get a left side speedo until they were used up.

Depending on when in 65, it could be for the 66 model run, so a Muncie built in 65 for a 66 car would have the cable on the passenger car. A muncie built in 65 for a 65 car would have the cable on the drivers side.
