: Finished my Custom Auto Meter dash!!!
mason71 Jan 30th, 05, 7:49 PM Well here it is, it took me about three weeks. I'm planning on taking out the bulbs and putting in some LED lights. My only problem is my speedo is a little jumpy at sometimes. If anyone has any thoughts on what could smooth it out, i would greatly apperciate it. It's an electric speedo (i have the Auto Meter sender). I have more pics on my site. Sorry about the quality. dumb camra http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/700000-700999/700109_21_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/700000-700999/700109_22_full.jpg
sideburns72 Jan 30th, 05, 7:58 PM looks fantastic man. really great!
dittoz Jan 31st, 05, 1:24 PM Is the speedo jumping from electrical transients somewhere? Like maybe a loose ground wire?
Could a filter circuit either be failing or needed in there somewhere to help out a little?
Just a couple thoughts...
Looks great though - Nice change from the sweeper set-up!
mason71 Jan 31st, 05, 7:54 PM thanks guys, I think my grounds are okay, but not sure about the filter circuit stuff
Rowdymon Feb 1st, 05, 12:49 AM Do you have some closer up pics of your template and how the backing mounts...
I've been considering something similar
mason71 Feb 1st, 05, 8:20 PM sorry, I don't remember measurements and stuff. I made a lot of visual mesurements. I found this guy (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/tlfakes/album?.dir=b92b&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/tlfakes/my_photos) (he took better pictures) when I was thinking of doing this, his pictures gave me great ideas. My cluster (frame etc) is pretty much the same as his. You just have to get focused and try things. Don't set the gauges to far back cause of space. You start to run into the firewall fast, (thats without the ac duct running along back there). Please ask if you have any more questions
Rowdymon Feb 2nd, 05, 9:17 AM Thanks for the link...
I'll let you know after I do some more thinkin on the subject if I have any questions...
BB_Mike Feb 2nd, 05, 1:17 PM Mason,
I like what you've done. You are right about removing the idiot bulbs for for panel mounted LED/Lamps. I have done something similiar to what you did if you want to look at it and some other examples I've collected.
Custom gauge panel. (http://www.chevelle-ss.com/Members_Pages/Mike_S_files/Custom%20Gauges.htm)
The jumpy speedo does sound like a not-so-good ground. I am not sure how the sending units work on the Autometer modules. It's probably best you just call them and see what they suggest.
I use a mechanical speedo. I just had to get a custom cable built for it (needed a new one anyways). Still cost less than the electronic setup. ;)
Also, I would LOVE to find a way to remove my LED lights and create a "hybrid" version of the idiot lights. Whereby I could maintain the text letters on the gel inserts. and Even have the "arrows" for turn indicators. Maybe a CAD drawing and a local CNC shop. A few PIM nuts and you could just strap a generic colored lamp to the back of the plate... But I through my dash together at the same time I was doing a big block and new transmission buildup/install. So, those limpy dinky lamps where last minute grab at the electronics store.
BowtieAaron Feb 2nd, 05, 6:22 PM looks good. real good.

vrooom3440 Feb 5th, 05, 12:16 AM Mine jumps from electrical transients and when I did not have battery voltage to the sender (I have a 3 wire sender). Once I hooked up the battery voltage right everything pretty much smoothed out. With the exception of the significant system-wide voltage swings...
jnorth Feb 5th, 05, 9:41 AM Looks great! smile.gif
Alwhite00 Feb 6th, 05, 8:37 PM What size gages are you running? Would it be possible to get 1 more in there? I'm thinking speed, tach, fuel, amp, oil & water - Maybe a little smaller?
Looks great.

mason71 Feb 7th, 05, 5:49 PM Vrooom, sorry but I dont understand what your talking about "battery voltage" and the "significant system-wide voltage swings"
Alwhite, If I remeber right, they are 3 3/8 and 2 5/8 Ultra Lites. Check out Auto Meter's (http://hp.autometer.com/homepage/homepage.html) website, its great.
Alwhite00 Feb 10th, 05, 12:18 PM Do you still have the factory lenz over the autometers or did you remove the stock chevelle one?
LK
mason71 Feb 11th, 05, 9:21 AM I took off the lens.
