why would a 350hp chevelle (ala super chevy mag)have 250 rear wheel hp while a new camaro
will have 260 from only 300hp ???

what else is there besides tranny and driveshaft,(hmmm or how much power does a 12 bolt eat)

thanx

The "350 horsepower" Chevelle rating of old was a "gross" rating. When they changed to a "net" rating system the horsepower rating dropped to around 300 for the same engine combo. The actual output of the engine did not change, only the way they measured things at the factory. The "net" way of measuring horsepower was also at the crankshaft, but included things like power steering, alternator, air conditioning, exhaust, etc. The "net" rating system is a more acurate way of telling you how much horsepower the engine will put out IN the car. We can't race dynos, right?
As sad as it is, the new Corvette style motor in the Camaro could actually have more "gross" output than alot of the Big Block engines out there. Hope this answers your question.

The engine shop I go to has both an engine dyno and a chassi dyno. They have told they have tested an engine with 375 hp on the engine dyno and it makes about 262 at the rear wheels. They said it is usually a drop of 30% on horsepower from engine dyno to rear wheel horsepower.

also newer cars are more efficient they lose less power through the trans and and the rear then the chevelle does
