I have 2 easy (most likely) questions about my 1970 Malibu for you guys out there. The first is the springs. I noticed under the rear axle I have coil springs around my shocks, was that the "heavy duty suspension" option? I've noticed other 1970 Bow Ties without it so I found it questionable to me. Also, I've noticed I have no brake booster, but my friend has a 1970 Nova 4-Door 307 (lowest V-8 model) with a brake booster. How is that? I was led to believe that not only are Chevelles higher ranking over Chevy II's and Novas, but a given would be a Malibu Sport Coupe would be higher then a 4-Door Nova wouldn't it? Hmmm.....

the springs surrounding your shocks are after market units mostly used for carrying heavy loads or "helping" tired rear springs.
power brakes were OPTIONAL. It didn't matter what model you got, with the exception of the SS models with disc brakes ( but then the SS package was an option).

So what you are saying is thatyou have a 70 chevelle with no power brakes and a pair of over load shocks.
No problem, The shocks are just a pair of overload shocks that someone has added or sometimes called coil over shocks. Their main purpose is for carrying extra weight and compensating for worn out springs. But most of us install them to boost up the rear a little bit, Iv'e had them in my 72 for years. The heavy duty suspension basicly consists of a fatter swaybar up front with slightly stiffer springs all around and a rear swaybar with boxed rear lower control arms. It's also not uncommon to see a Chevelle with no power brakes, In fact a lot of the early SS 396's came without power brakes and power steering. Just went fast.
