: Replacing clock with Tach ?

I have playing with the idea of replacing my broken clock with a Tach. The 64SS has a clock in the middle of the dash, right above the steering column. I could probably find a tach to fit the hole but I was wondering if anyone has ever done this ???

Any suggestions would be appreciated. One thing though... I don't really want to do surgery on the dash but if nescessary I would do it. I have an spare "perfect" dash face so if I have to "alter" the one I have then I could get away with it.

"Daddy, why is at always 5200'o'clock?"

Sounds like a groovy idea, might try it in my 70-Super Sweep dash.

Wow! I'm not the only one...

Here's what I did:

I had finally tracked down a 1970 sweep dash (Malibu) clock only to have it break. I said, what the heck, why not have function instead of form.

My car was originally ordered without a clock so it had that ugly boring clock delete plate. I hacked the plate and made it into a custom mounting bracket.

I then bought a tiny SUN tachometer, dissasembled it, and made my own custom 1970 Sweep dash tach where the clock would be! It almost looks factory. I even painted my own yellow and red line.

Unfortunately, I didn't take much care in routing the wires so I'm getting some spark plug noise on my stock am radio. You want to take time to route the wires and ground that tach so it doesn't receive or give off inerference. I don't mind on my because I custom made my own am radio to play cd's and FM http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Hey buddy ever here of the ultra rare Malibu tach option in 1970! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

I thought the factory tach for 64-65 replaces the clock there. That would be my first choice .

Shooter,
The factory tach on a 65 was mounted to the top of the dash I believe. All the pic's that I have show it there. I have no idea where the 64 had it originally because if you ordered a clock and wanted a tach, the tach would have to go somewhere else.

I have heard that there is some kind of Quartz Clock conversion available to repair my clock but haven't got a clue where to find that.

Does anyone know where the factory would have put the tach on a 64SS ? What are it's spec's, ie: size, diameter, housing. I don't mind going to an original look if I can get the right parts.

You can buy the quartz conversion kit from Original Parts Group for $59.95 (800-243-8355) There are several instrument places that will repair the clock as original or convert to quartz for you. One is Instrument Services Inc(800-558-2674)
As far as the tach goes they relocated the clock to the top of the dash. I dont know the dia or specs of these tachs but yesterday when I was looking through the parts for sale in the non-member area someone was listing they had 5 from 64-65 for sale but no price listed. It was under Z16 title. Mabe someone who has one can help you more. GOOD LUCK

I seem to recall Novas (68-72) having a built-in tach option with their gauge package. It either replaced the clock or was in the vicinity thereof. I wonder if that would transplant to a malibu sweep dash easily. I haven't seen one in years so I can't say for sure...

I have a Sun Super II mounted in the clock location, looks almost stock. Unbolt the clock from the back of the cluster and fabricate a mounting bracket to clamp tach in place and seal around edges to keep dust off face. Fits quite nice and gives you a tach that will work with a HEI ignition.

As far as original Tach/clock combos will have to check books at home, am thinking that the clock was either in the centre of the tach (sort of a tic-toc-tach) or mounted on the console.

I have seen the Tach Pod located on top of the dash for 65. I have just gotten back my factory assembly manual and it shows the Tach occupying the Clocks spot on the cluster. Unfortunately they do not show a clock and tach setup at all. It appears that you had a choice of one or the other.

Hey Can,

The 65 SS optional tach was where the clock is in the center bezel of the dash. The CLOCK was mounted in a separate pod on top of the dash where most of us would expect a tach. You can probably find a 65 SS tach out there somewhere but for $$$. Clocks by Rodger 901.644.6120 can fix you up with a quartz conversion to repair the stock clock for around $100. I like JimC's idea, but my Sun Super is in a pod in front of the old clock's position. My stereo has a built in clock that I use instead. mgg (Gold # 209)
