you could put a switch in the pos wire that connects to the distributor and this will kill the engine from turning over...

well lets see there are a few ways to do this. so let me ask one more question first. what type of distributor do you have, stock, HEI, or aftermarket and is your battery under the hood or in the trunk?

Thanks Everybody! Steve, I couldn't find the article you mentioned....I searched the words Kill Switch/Alarm 69SS and others but didn't get a hit. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place. BILL M, THE DISTRIBUTOR IS STOCK.

ok the kill switch article said to disconnect the positive wire to your cigarette lighter and run a wire from the negative side of your coil the the terminal on the back of the lighter socket. push in the lighter and no start.

Run a wire from the - side of the coil to one side of a switch. Run another wire from the other side of the switch to a metal ground.
With the switch on the starter just turns without firing the car. Turn the switch off and the car fires up. Hide the switch.

I would like to use the cig lighter kill switch method, but I want to make sure I completely understand. First, can you do this with an HEI? Second, pardon my lack of knowledge, is the negative wire on the distribor a ground wire attached to the chassis somewhere and all you have to do is move the end connected to the chassis? This would mean that by pushing in the lighter, the wire is not being grounded?

Or: do you use two wires with one running from the chassis(?) to the lighter and a second running from the lighter to the negative wire on the distributor?

Thank you! It's good to be scared of electricity. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

To whee. The cigarette lighter kill switch is not a good idea on a HEI for two reasons. You do not have access to the negative side of the coil(this is different than distributor ground) and if you did, grounding the negative side of a HEI coil through a low resistance lighter heating element would damage the control module. The cigarette lighter is a low resistance wire with power on one side all the time. When you push the lighter in you are grounding the other side and it draws current until it gets hot enought to pop out. To wire it up as a kill switch you remove the orange power wire from the lighter and run a wire from this termninal to the "-" side of the coil (points ignition). With the lighter pushed in you are grounding out the points through the low resistance heating element. With the lighter out the circuit is open and the points can drive the coil. This system requires points type ignition and a working lighter. Now if the thief smokes he may figure it out.
