Will a 1970 Chevelle steering wheel interchange with a 1972 steering wheel? If so, are there major modifications required?

Also, any information as to a source for 1972 Chevelle SS steering wheels would be appreciated. Thanks.

Malibu...if the steering wheels are both from a Chevrolet (Chevelle, Camaro, etc.) it should be an easy swap...provided you have all the pieces you will need. Once you get the current steering wheel taken apart it should have just one nut holding the actual steering wheel on to the column. I use a cheap steering wheel puller that I bought at one of the local parts houses to pull the wheel off after removing the nut. To put the new wheel on just carefully align the steering wheel onto the splines and tap it on. A rubber mallet or hammer (very light taps) works fine for me. I would suggest that you pay close attention to how all the little parts come out and go back in so that you make sure that the horn will function properly. Speaking of the horn, I disconnect the horn first, others may suggest that it's better to disconnect the battery before you start..anyway. Also you probably want to make sure the wheels and tires are pointing perfectly straight ahead before you pull the old steering wheel...don't want the new wheel crooked while you're driving down the road. Hope this helped.

A 1970 wheel and a 1972 wheel are completely different, if you want to swap a 1970 wheel in place of a 1972 wheel I don't think there will be a problem. A 1971-1972 wheel are the same and may interchange with Camaros and Novas of the same years, as for finding a 1972 SS wheel I have seen some at swapmeets, also you might want to check with part suppliers who advertise selling used parts they might have one.

Should be easy if you have all the pieces for the wheel. These would be the horn button and so on. I have a '72 ElCamino with a nice brushed stainless/soft rim wheel from a Buick; the Chev horn button even fits, so it looks right.

The only part that is different from the standard Chevelle steering wheel is the horn shroud. The actual wheel is the same. The horn shroud is not reproduced, so you'll have to find a used one. I've seen them on eBay. That's where I sold my whole steering wheel.

I replaced mine with the "optional" wheel, seen below. GM had a zillion of these optional wheels, they are super easy to find.
