I am considering putting a tach on either the column or the dash on my 70 El Camino. I have the dash tach which works, but want the other just for bad looks, if you know what I mean. If I purchase a 5" monster tach, and bolt it to the top the dash, this will ruin the dash if I ever take it off, right? If I go with a column tach, I will have to go with a 3 3/4" tach. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, Don http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm using the 5" monster tach with shift light on my steering column ( 70 Elky) and very much like it. You don't need to know how fast you're going just how fast your spinning that big block http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Manuel, does your El Camino have your tranny linkage on the column, or on the floor? If on the column, you had no problems with the tach interfering with the shift collar? Thanks for the reply, Don http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

my 70 el camino has a 5" monster autometer on the steering column but if I was going to do it again I would go with the smaller one, preferably mallory. go check out the mallory catalog at a shop

I using an Autometer "street tach" which is mounted on the column of my 71. As stated above you have to accomodate the steering lock out function if your car is using it. I like the tach as the color of the face and numbers kind of matches the stock speedo. I mounted it at about 2 o'clock, which allows a good view of the speedo by block the "bright" head light indicator. You may need some wire wrap to hide the routing of the wires, maybe it came with the tach, I can't remember. This seems to be a good quality accurate unit, with the ability to read rpm to the nearest 100 rpm. Watch out what tach you buy if you have a MSD box. You may need some kind of adaptor.
BTW I also mounted a 2 inch Z series oil pressure gauge near the tach on the column and another 2 inch temp gauge in the clock spot. Easier to read with no clutter under the dash. The radio has a clock. Good luck. Steve

On one of my earlier Chevelles(70) I installed my 5in. "Monster" on the dash by fabricating a bracket to fit between the dashboard and pad. My latest 70SS396 ie; round gauges will get it's "Monster" on the column, only I will clock it to cover the factory tach.
