I HAVE OWNED AN ORIGINAL 69 SS 396 SINCE 1978 AND HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE ORIGINAL SS WHEELS. TO LOOK AT THE WHEELS ARE IN GOOD COND BUT IF YOU LOOK CLOSE AT WHERE THE LUG NUTS INTERFACE WITH THE WHEELS SOME OF HE HOLES HAVE
ENLARGED OVER TIME DUE TO DETERIORATION. THIS IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE SOME OF THE LUG NUTS ARE ONLY HOLDING ON BY THE HIGH POINTS AND THIS IS A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN. I CANT FIND ANY LUG NUTS WITH A WIDER SCHANK
TO MAKE UP FOR THE ENLARGED HOLES. SHORT OF SPENDING 550-600
BUCKS FOR NEW WHEELS DOES ANYBODY KNOW OF A FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM OR
DO ANY OF YOU HAVE OR KNOW OF A GOOD SET OF USED WHEELS FOR SALE?
THANKS FOR LISTENING.
SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS LOCK ON I REALIZED IT WAS ON AFTER I TYPED THIS COMPLETE NOTE AND DID NOT HAVE TIME TO DO IT OVER AGAIN,SHAME ON ME.

Quick Fix: Drop washers between the wheel and lug.
It may look like crap, but it'll keep the wheel on until you find another fix. You might be able to find washers that match the wheel. In which case, you may not even notice them and you can leave them on. Depends on how important it is to you.

I would not mess around with the bad wheels, they will end up causing more damage than the cost to replace them. Driving with wheels like those is like driving with unbalanced tires, I can just imagine how it must drive. You will get all the problems that unbalanced tires will give you plus the chance of a very nasty accident if one of them comes off. Take a look around on this site and find a some new wheels, place a wanted add or just get some cheapos for a while!!!

First off, dont use washers unless you want to die. Wheels coming off at speed usually are a cause for alarm. Next, if the wheels arent too bad I have heard that corvette lugs of this vintage have a larger cone seat area so will help. I would just go to a swap meet and get some replacement bare wheels, there are plenty of good ones around. Look for the code "YA" near the valve stem this is the 69ss code. This will keep you from getting a ford or mopar wheel which look similar but have a different bolt circle.. (4 1/2" vs GM 4 3/4")..by the way the 70 code is "AO", and will work fine if you dont care about the codes. Bare wheels will go for $25-$30 a wheel, and restored sets with rings and centers usually go for $300-$400 depending on condition.

another thing you can do is find someone who is a good welder and have him put some weld around the holes, then finish it off for the lug nut
