I'm getting ready to install my new molded carpet. I tell how the front piece goes but I can't tell which way the back piece goes on. On the underside of the back piece is a section of gute that covers one half of the back piece. Does this piece of gute go over the floor plan of the back seat where your feet would rest or under the back seat.

Under the seat. Also, before you trim anything, spend awhile pounding the carpet with your fist into all the bends and curves. It takes awhile for the carpet to relax and fit properly.

Jeffrey,

Are you sure? I have always put the jute pad on the area where your feet go it seems to always come out good.

Since it's a molded carpet, the mold will conform to the floor pan (somewhat). The floorpan should show up in the mold, right? The concave part is the floorpan and the convex part goes under the seat. At least that's the way it is with a '68 model.

The jute is to protect the carpet from the feet and other things that will compress it. Not much of that going on under the seat.

It's much like the carpet in your home, without padding under it, you'd wear it out in a week by just walking on it and grinding it against the floor below. Thus the jute padding keeps the carpet from being ground against the steel floor in your car.

Rick,
The jute pad goes in the foot well and up under the front seat, not under the rear seat which was ragtops original question.
As to what I meant about pounding it into place, its molded roughly into shape, but if you don't shove it down where it belongs before you trim it, when it finally settles into place, it will be to small.

Sorry, Jeffry, I was joking about the Ninja training. smile.gif It's very good advice, though I'd use something besides my fist. Maybe a rubber hammer wrapped in rags.

How'd it go, Jamie?

We set ours in the living room for almost a week, and watched it change shape daily.

"Perfecto"

Really does work!

After seeing the pics you sent me the other day, Richard and Judy, I have to say that you guys are some of the most awesome Chevelle engineers I've run across! Keep up the good work! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Thanks Chad;

Most have no idea what we have gone thru on this Frame-Off Project (Including beadblasting and powdercoating the frame, and every piece, including the rear end assembly). It was within 2 weeks of being registered, then we completely dismantled it (To Comply To The SCTA/USFRA Rules).

It's getting very close to those 200 (?) MPH runs at El Mirage and Bonneville (SCTA/USFRA Sanctioned Events). Just finished the "NEW" All Aluminum Custom Dash (Side to Side).

Will post pics as soon as it is finished being painted (They don't allow primered cars anymore at their events).

As to the original question on this post, we actually watched the carpet take "SHAPE" day by day. If someone has a new carpet set that isn't doing this, then we wonder if the carpet that was purchased was molded under pressure. Ours is the ACC brand, and it's "Beautiful".
