ok i thought it was a battery problem but, now I think its the starter getting too hot from the headers. would that be just about the only thing that would cause hot start problems? Ive ordered a mini starter to give more clearence. itsa 454 with 8.75 compresion so it shouldnt be hard to crank over, right? thanx for you help

Justin, You may as well get a remote solenoid kit for that sucker too!
Big block's are notorious for hard starting problem's when hot. Summit sell's the solenoid's, good luck.

really? I need the remote solenoid with a minni starter?
Ive had this motor for 6 months, it never used to do this. although I have broken the cup off about 5 starters. would heat cause that?

so they connectors for the starter could be the culprit? I just took it for a drive and it seemed to fire up fine afterwards.
thanx again

Hey Justin,
My small block with headers and a mini starter gave me fits. I finally put a heat shield and remote Bosh mini relay on it to get it to start reliably in the summer. I can send you a skematic if you like. mgg

Remote Sillynoid works good, and your wires should be protected, if you don't have the origenal metal tube protector then one can be fabricated from that metal tube that went from the valve cover to the air cleaner, just take a ball-pean hammer and flair the ends some so the sharp edge won't cut the wires.

When you say you keep breaking the CUP OFF do you mean the end that goes toward the flywheel??? If so, you have an alignment problem. Need to shim the starter so the teeth of the flywheel and the starter properly align.
I just had that happen on my 65 vette. I'm lucky to still have a car. My daughter was out in the vette. She stopped in where she works to show off the car. When she left, she got less than 1/4 mile and the engine died. No electric anywhere. Had AAA flatbed it home. At this point I thought the battery shorted out since I had no power anywhere, the cables were tight and when jumpers were connected sparks everywhere. As I started to disconnect the battery cables, sparks started to fly, a grinding noise and smoke coming from starter. The 10 seconds it took me to get the battery cable off seemed like an hour.
Turned out that the "cup"of the starter broke off letting the armature of the starter to short to the case. The only thing that saved my vette from burning up was the lead of the battery post melted and somehow created a glazed barrer between the clamp and the post.
God must like my Vette because He saved it from burning up.
Sorry for the long story but I wanted to let you know what might happen if you don't get the starter properly aligned.

this problem has just started. I have used many other starter and none of them had this problem. is it possible that the castings of the starters are that inconsistant that they will move the starter enough touch the headers?
thanx
