Ok Im doing a body off resto on my 71 Malibu, got the 454 all ready, muhahaha, anyway. I removed the carpet and the sound deadining material now I have a black sticky mess. Is there something that will get this stuff off or should I scrape the best I can and just paint over it?
Thanks Mike

Mike, those are prolly the remnants of your tar pads. I would NOT paint over the stuff, but remove it as best you can. Hopefully someone else will pipe in and be of more assistance.

Bug and Tar Remover or adhesive remover by 3M both work and are relatively safe. I typically scrape down to the metal floor with a putty knife and then finish off with the above. WFM http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Mike,
I used a heat gun and a putty knife. Made the tar pads soft and easy to scrape away. I cleaned up the residue w/brake cleaner and old rags. Have really good ventilation with brake cleaner. It is nasty stuff.

Once you get the gunk cleaned off, it would be a good time to coat the floors w/ POR15. The stuff will rust-proof them almost for ever. (no, I don't work there) I just like the product.
