I have a indash voltometer and it reads 11 at Idle and 14 1/2 while reving. does this mean its charging?

It is charging any time the voltage goes over 12.6 volts. It should be charging at idle if you have an alternator and only a minimum of electrical things in use .

Hey Justin,

JW is right; a fully charged batt is about 12.7 volts a dead batt is about 11.7 volts. Get a good digital volt meter and stick it directly on the batt terminals while the engine is running. With a fully charged batt look for 13.8 to 14.5 volts. Anything over 15.5 is hazardous to the health and longevity of your charging system. mgg

would the volts read lower if my 500watt stero and my two electric fans are on?

It should maintane or it will lead to a dead battery. maybe time for a larger watt alternator

Watch your Master Card bill if you see excessive amounts for acid or distilled water
you know it's the battery.
