I receantly bought a 72 ss steering wheel at the bone yard for $10.It is near perfect. The only problem is that has been exposed to the weather and it had vines growing through it.At first I thought it was shot because it had mold growing on it.When I wet it with my finger and rubbed it came preaty clean so I bought it.For $10 I can't lose.I took it home and soaked it with simple green. It's still really chalky and dull.Should I try a sos pad, or will that scratch it.Any tips, thanks

I just got a POR-15 catalog and they have a whole line-up of stuff for steering wheel repair. From bondo filler to sanding and painting. just a thought.

Simple Green full-strength can be too harsh for some plastics and turn the surface chalky. You could try some plastic polish to bring the gloss back to it, or some buffing compound made specifically for plastics and a buffing wheel.

As it turns out the sreering wheel is hard rubber, not plastic.I took a SOS pad to it and it looks brand new.The thing is now that I see that it is rubber, I think that is the wrong wheel.Anyone know if it's right or not. It looks like my origonal except it's rubber. Thanks

Hi, I've got the same steering wheel on my
69SS. Some past owner put it on. It definitely
is hard rubber. The outer rim gets smooth from years of use. Mine is a little smaller, so it might have come from a 72 SS Camaro

You are correct about the rubber wheel not being correct. The 72 wheel is hard plastic. The rubber wheel is a 73-up variety, and the Malibu version is different than that on the big cars and Novas.
