: Cleaning vinyl

Hi All:

I have some items (door panels, sun visors, sail panels) that need cleaning that have been laying around for some time and have got dirty and some mold/mildew on them.
I am afriad that household cleaners might be too strong (for the vinyl or the plastic 'chrome' trim in the door panels), but I need something to cut through the grime.

The sunvisors pose an extra problem in that they are somewhat porous and will soak the cleaner.

All advice is appreciated.

you could try just a damp washrag with a little bit of dishwashing soap mixed in with it. Then wipe it down with a rag with no soap, and when it all dries treat it with your favorite vinyl protectant.

I've done this on my vehicles several times before. In some cases it could take some of the color off though, so you might want to test it out on something inconspicuous first.

Ron, here's what I have used on all my interior vinyl pieces over the years. A good foam cleaner like STP Tough Stuff or Turtle Wax Vinyl Top Cleaner. Spray it on, use a brush to spread it around the surface, let it sit for a minute or two and then scrub with the brush. If it's really bad you may have to repeat the process.

My personal preference is not to use protectant on interior pieces, but to each his own.

Hello Ron,

I have had very good results keeping a pearl white interior clean with GM Vinyl Cleaner (available at GM dealers) and with Spray Nine (Auto Parts stores, maybe Home Depot / Lowe's).

Each has cut threw very dirty spots on vinyl seats, dashboard, etc.

Best of luck, Joe

Thanks Joe. I guess it makes sense that the general would know what to clean it's vinyl with...

I've just found that Simple green literally does everything. I stir fried some shrimp in it last night, used it to cure my athletes foot, cleaned my interior and used it to kill some pretty bad heartburn. How can something that does so much be "Simple"?

I agree, simple green is great stuff. Tires, engine compartments, undercarriage, trunk, carpets.....If you stirfry though, be sure you soak your shrimp in it beforehand, otherwise they come out chewy.

try 40% baking soda, 50% water, 10% soap

Dish soap?

Are you saying it's better than simple green?

I will say that even with simple green, I just can't seem to get my top totally clean. Too many years in the barn I guess. So if you claim this works better, I'm all ears!

yes dish soap

and after you clean with this mix... wash down the interior with warm water, let dry

Now you want that interior to shine
so take a very little amount of petroleum jelly and rub it in LEAVE YOUR WINDOWS DOWN or the vapor on a hot day will get on the inside of your windows

Seat belt cleaning
boil some VERY HOT! water add a little laundry soap put your seat belts in and stir. repeat until clean.

the purpose of store cleaners is to break down dirt... but over time it will also break down your interior especially simple green
