I just recieved my new Eaton posi carrier, Richmond 3.73 ring & pinion, new axles, bearings, seals etc. for the rebuild of my 1966 12 bolt rearend. I was going to assemble the rearend myself, but after watching the video tape I got from Richmond, I would probably have to spend more money on the setup tools, than to have someone setup the ring & pinion for me. I need to know the best place to take this thing for assembly in the Buffalo NY area.
For those of you that are experienced in setting up ring & pinions, do I really need the center distance measuring tool to properly set up the pinion shims?, or can I just use the "mustard" to get the proper engagement pattern? What about the preload on all the bearings, how can this be accomplished without the fancy torque wrench?
Also, what's the best methond for holding the yoke while setting the backlash?
I bought all my stuff from Tom's Differentials in Ca. They advised me that the bolts used to mount the ring gear to the carrier are too long (in the kit he sold me), and I would have to use lockwashers, does this sound right?
Finally, what type of lube do I use for this new Eaton posi & Richmond gears?

Thanks!

ETD, I wouldn't try this on your own. I did it way back when I was a machinsts apprentice and it took alot of measuring tools, dials with mag bases and even had to specially grind my end washers on a surface grinder. Not something I would even begin to try in my garage today.

I had a driveline problem some time ago and wanted to swap ,my 3.31 for 3.73. I called Denny's Driveshaft and they recommended a fella named Bobby at R E Speed and Fabrications ( Military Rd. in Kenmore 877-4147). Denny's has a great reputation and I would think they wouldn't refer me to a hack. Secondly, Bob Harris at Camaro Specialties ( they also do A-bodies ) has a fella who sets up rear end only if they're out of the car. They're in East Aurora at 652-7086. Finally, the guy I was going to have do the work is in Ontario NY outside of Rochester. Why? He's done it for a few racers I know, will do it with the rear in the car and charges $125. Whatta deal!

I never called him because my "3.31" gearset turned out to be 3.73's after all. If you need his name and number let me know, I'll hook you up.

Ever see a plum colored 67 runnin' around Hamburg?

P.S. The email I sent you bounced back. Is the BuffState/UB email still valid?
