I just recieved my new Eaton posi carrier, Richmond 3.73 ring & pinion, new axles, bearings, seals etc. for the rebuild of my 1966 12 bolt rearend. I was going to assemble the rearend myself, but after watching the video tape I got from Richmond, I would probably have to spend more money on the setup tools, than to have someone setup the ring & pinion for me. I need to know the best place to take this thing for assembly in the Buffalo NY area.
For those of you that are experienced in setting up ring & pinions, do I really need the center distance measuring tool to properly set up the pinion shims?, or can I just use the "mustard" to get the proper engagement pattern? What about the preload on all the bearings, how can this be accomplished without the fancy torque wrench?
Also, what's the best methond for holding the yoke while setting the backlash?
I bought all my stuff from Tom's Differentials in Ca. They advised me that the bolts used to mount the ring gear to the carrier are too long (in the kit he sold me), and I would have to use lockwashers, does this sound right?
Finally, what type of lube do I use for this new Eaton posi & Richmond gears?
Thanks!
