: Gauge plastic polishing
ELLI Dec 2nd, 02, 12:02 AM Has anyone tried to polish the plastic in front of their gauges? Is it worth the time or should I just spring for a new one? Mine has overspray on it, making it kind of hard to see through.

fastss396man Dec 2nd, 02, 12:07 AM Mat,
Polishing should work just fine. However make sure you use plastic polish. I was able to remove slight scuffs and imperfections on mine.

Barista Dec 2nd, 02, 1:14 AM Mat - There's a guy here in Lincoln that does a masterful job at this. He did my radio face and it looks like new. He used to be a regular poster here but has been pretty scarce for the past year or so. Do you know Coppertop? (AKA Radio Joe)? If not, I'll give him a call for you. I tried to get him to tell me how he does it once, he smiled and said "it's a trade secret".

67shovel Dec 2nd, 02, 9:59 AM You can treat the plastic just like paint as far as buffing goes. Hit it with a clean pad and some medium compound. You can burn it in there pretty good to since you won't buff through. You can also sand scratches out just like color sanding. This works good on taillight/ blinker lens too! Careful though or you will catch it with the buffer and send it flying!
BIGMOE65 Dec 4th, 02, 12:36 AM I used blue magic metal polish on a soft rag and did it by hand, came out great.
Xtreme70SS396 Dec 4th, 02, 5:32 PM I've used Meguire's ScratchX with outstanding results. Unfortunately, takes some time and elbow grease, but works great!
fatlip Dec 4th, 02, 8:57 PM Hey if you have a Harley shop close buy, there H.D polish is the best I have ever found,is like 5 different kinds for the items you are working with. I used this product on the round tail lenses and on the new plastic head light covers on new cars, the vans headlights were almost white with time and it polished out with some elbow grease

Olle Dec 4th, 02, 10:10 PM If you have scratches and overspray, a product called Micro-Mesh (available from micromark.com) works great. It's a set of different grit wet sanding cloths, and also includes a polish for the finishing touch. Using the cloths, together with the soft sanding block provided in the kit will make it easy to get an even surface without the wavy appearance you can get sometimes if using just polish. I used this on a set of Camaro gauges that I thought were beyond repair, and they turned out looking like new. I finished it with some car wax, and it stayed good for years.
