Does any body have a measurement where the staple shifter goes,I am converting my 70SS,
I have 1 bracket for the rear of the console
and the shifter bolts to the console, and I guess I have to make a big hole for the shifter cable to go through too. al

I just happen to have my interior out putting in new carpet.
try this for that rear console bracket.

from the centerline of the seat belt bolt hole in the floor on passenger side to centerline of the bracket should be 5 " , the bracket should be 3/4 '' off the hump. then install the console to line up the shifter mounting , you will have to raise the shifter about 1/4 inch in the rear and mount solid on the front . If you look close at the front of the hump you may see dimples where the front of the conslole mounts ,even if its not a SS car.

Hope this helps

I just did this. Look in an assembly manual for location of 1 1/2 inch diameter hole for cable. Put the shift cable on the trans and adjust. Pull the cable thru the hole and attach to the shifter. Set the shifter in a position so the cable doesn't rub or bind. Mark (center punch), drill holes and mount the shifter. Put the console on and align it with the mounting holes on the shifter. Mark the console mounting holes. Drill holes for front console mount. Weld or screw the rear bracket in place. mount the console.
This procedure worked great for me.

I know this post is 8 years old, but new clones are being built every day. My 70 Chevelle is in the paint shop right now & I've done a lot of research on the shifter/console mounting. Although I'm not installing mine until next week, this is how I'm going to do it. First...stop stressing over whether it's going to be exactly where it would have been if it rolled off the assembly line with a console. You'll be within a quarter inch, if not right on the money & nobody is going to notice. Not all Chevelles are going to have dimples for mounting on the hump. They will have a slightly raised bump which is approx. 1 1/2 inches in diameter, where the 1 1/2 inch hole needs to be drilled for the cable. This bump is located slightly to the left of the upper portion of the shifter when it is installed. If you look at the upper left part of the shifter, you will note that there is a quarter moon shaped indent in it. (sorry...that's the best way I can think of describing it). Center the shifter, line the quarter moon indent up with the shift cable hole and drill & bolt away. From there, you can line the console & rear mount up with the shifter. I found a great picture, but forgot the link. I'll post it somewhere later, so anybody that is getting ready to do this can see it. It really took most of the mystery out of it for me.

I am doing the bench to buckets, as well as the column to floor swap.

Ive been sweating this install for awhile now. This is the last thing I need to do, (well other then the bucket seat adapters) before the body goes off to paint.

Maybe its just me, But hacking up the tunnel to mount the shifter just scares the bejesus out of me as I do not have the motor or tranny installed.

If you find those pics, I, as well as others would be grateful!

Thanks guys
