: ORIGINAL 70 LS6?
nebula72 Aug 3rd, 99, 12:08 PM i saw an ad in the classifieds for a 70 chevelle ls6 for sale. needs resto for $6800. states the only damage to the car was a crack in the rear portion of the frame which was since welded. states the motor that is in the car is currently a running 396. the 454 block is in his garage which comes with the car. the only info i have on the motor so far is a code of "CRV" is the vin located on the deck like a small block? what are the caracteristics of an original ls6. what can i look for when i see this car to make sure it is authentic? is the price worth it.?

Bob70 Aug 3rd, 99, 1:17 PM The CRV engine code is for a 454/450hp manual transmission, 4bbl. Which are the specs. for an LS6.
Where did you see this add? If it's a real LS6 $6800 is a steal, if it's salvagable.
But remember there were only 4,475 1970 LS6's built. So be cautious.

Dave Birdwell Aug 3rd, 99, 3:52 PM Things to look for...
1. If car has tach and gauges, the redline on the tach will be 6500 rpm. This package was optional, so not all cars have tach and gauges.
2. A single 3/8" fuel line, no small return line unless the car was built in California plant, code L in VIN
3. Malibu door panel emblems
4. no Air conditioning
5. Engine should have casting number 3964291 heads, flat aluminum intake with the last three of the part # 587, Holley carb,# 3967477, distributor # 1111437, deep groove pulleys, and a few more things I can't think of right now.
Definately worth $6800.
Is the M22 trans still in the car?
I have to disagree with Dave on the malibu door panel emblems.I have seen many including my own that has SS on the door panels.I also believe other LS6 cars other then CA had return lines(not all but some)

Steve A Aug 3rd, 99, 7:43 PM I believe the casting number on the intake manifold should actually be 3963569.
Dave Birdwell Aug 3rd, 99, 8:08 PM Yep, ya got me on the intake. Actually, I believe most 454 cars, LS5 and LS6 have Malibu emblems on the door panels. There are exceptions, of course.
Rainer Aug 4th, 99, 1:39 AM The "Malibu" door panel emblem could have come on any SS from 70-72. This is according to Gilbert Propes, musclecar guru (p. 30 of the Year One catalog). I've also seen some original 69 SS cars with them.

nebula72 Aug 4th, 99, 6:45 AM saw the car last nite. boy needs work in rear quarters. frame is fairly rusty. a few small holes. no ac, saddle interior, m22 no console, car has ss emblems on door panels. tried finding build sheet. checked dash, seats, door panels, couldnt find it. where else could the build sheet be on a 70? tach redline is 6500rpm. car currently has a 396 in it which runs pretty good. he only has the 454 block in the garage. here are some of the #'s
t0206 crv
6197
3963512 (on back)
L169 gm8 (on back)
how can i tell if this was the original motor without build sheet.
only a very small percentage of SS's had malibu enblems on the door panels only because of a shortage of SS emblems that year. In fact because there are so many fake SS's the malibu emblem is incorrect for the ls6 unless you have documentation to prove it ie:bill of sale
