Any hints or tricks to help get the front seal out of my glide and putting a new one in? Also for future reference, i want to find a 5 or 6 speed manual overdrive transmission. I dont however want to pay $3000 for a new one. Were there any cars (newer of course) that had these in them and will they fit into my chevelle?

Thanks 68chevelle

Car craft just had a story on swapping in a T-56 six speed from a LT-1 Camaro into a 69 Camaro, so lots of similar issues compared to a Chevelle. IMHO it seemed like too much work to adapt the stock T-56 compared to the price of the Richmond 5 and 6 speeds which are a lot closer to bolt in. The used T-56 goes for at least $1500 then you need a special flywheel, pull type bellhousing, shorter extension housing to keep the stock console shifter position etc.

Most of the stock T-5 (5 speeds)trannys are only rated for around 300 FT/Lb of torque. That won't last too long under heavy use, although some guys do run them with healthy motors. The Tremec units are much stronger, Cobra R's and Saleen's have them maybe one could fit a Chevelle, don't know

You can get the seal out with a big screwdriver but its a lot easier with a seal pulling tool, has a large hook that makes it easy..when installing the new one just tap it in with a rubber mallet a little at a time and go all the way around the seal to keep it straight. Remember to put some tranny fluid on the seal and converter shaft before putting the converter on to keep from tearing the seal..
