can anyone help me with shimming my starter. the teeth on the flexplate are shewed at the ends. does this mean I should use half a shim on the outside bolt? should I use two shims? thanx

I got this method from a real starter store (the guy rebuilds them for a living). This is from memory but I think I have it right.
With the starter installed and tight, the teeth on the starter gear should be 1/8 inch from the flywheel teeth. You can measure this with a 1/8 in drill bit. If it is too tight, add a full shim. If it is too loose add 1/2 of a shim to the outside bolt only. You may have to add more shims or 1/2 shims to get it right.
Also if the flywheel is too chewed up you may have to change it. It worked for me first time, hope it helps you.

I can't put a picture in this forum but here is some info on the subject of shimming a starter that I copied.

Ditto's, Dean,Im having the same problem with my 72 ec I just bought.Starter sounded bad so I removed the two shims in it because It looked like it was to far away from the flex plate. may still have to shim up the outside. Rick
